Almost every month we have at least two movie premieres across the cinemas in the country. It is no longer abnormal to see fun-seeking Nigerians trooping to the cinemas every weekend to watch one or two movies.
Meanwhile, below is the list of Top 10 Nollywood Cinema Movies released in 2018. This however is based on viewers’ choice.
- Lion Heart
Lionheart is top of the list of Nollywood Cinema Movies in 2018. It was produced by Chinny Onwugbenu and directed by Genevieve Nnaji. It was actually Genevieve Nnaji’s directorial debut. Netflix bought over the film with a whooping sum of $3.8million the equivalent of N1, 051, 297, 231. 57.
The film stars veteran Nollywood actors like Pete Edochie, Genevieve Nnaji, Nkem Owoh, Kanayo O Kanayo, Onyeka Owenu, Sani Muazu, Yakubu Mohammed, Kalu Ikeagwu and others like Peter Okoye of P Square, and Phyno. It was acquired by Netflix on 7 September 2018.
Plot: The story is about Adaeze Obiagu (Genevieve Nnaji), who wants to substitute for her father, Ernest Obiagu (Pete Edochie), when he can no longer run his company due to health issues. Her father however asks his brother GodswillNkem Owoh) to substitute for him, and Godswill and Adaeze have to work hard together to save the company from a huge debt and to not lose the company to the businessman Igwe Pascal (Kanayo O Kanayo).
- King of Boys
This movie which was directed by Kemi Adetiba is one of the most searched Nollywood movies on google. King of Boys, a blockbuster movie was released on October 26, 2018, and has raked the whopping sum of N200 million at the box office.
It featured Nollywood star such as Adesuwa Etomi, Remilekun Reminisce Safaru, Sola Sobowale, Sharon Ooja and IllBliss.
King of Boys is one of the movies that dominated the Nigerian cinemas in 2018.
Storyline: the story is about Alhaja Eniola Salami (Sola Sobowale), a businesswoman and a philanthropist with a promising political future, very cunning and ruthless. She is loved by a lot of people and also feared. She faced a lot of challenges because of her status as the King but held on to the throne despite all.
- Moms At War
Directed by Oboli and written by Naz Onuzo. Moms At War stars, Funke Akindele, Omoni Oboli, Eucharia Anumobi, Yul Edochie, Michelle Dede, Abayomi Alvin and Adebukola Oladipupo.
Released on August 17, 2018, Moms At War tells the story of Ebubechukwu and Olaide, two competitive mothers, who want their kids to always come out on top.
Omoni Oboli, who doubles as the director of the movie, stars as Ebubechukwu, a posh career woman who was born with a silver spoon and expects her only daughter to follow in her footsteps. Funke Akindele on the other hand stars as Olaide, a self-made woman who built herself up from nothing to raise her son and give him the life she did not have.
With their children competing for a place in a prestigious scholars programme, everything starts to derail as the mothers go head to head to ensure that their own child wins.
- Seven and a Half Dates
This movie was released on Friday, August 3, 2018 and it was one of the Nollywood Cinema Movies that was released in 2018. It stars A-List Nollywood stars such as Mercy Johnson, Toyin Abraham, Jim Iyke, Sola Sobowale, Ken Erics, Frank Donga, Bayray Mcnwizu, MC Lively, Roxy Antak, Ali Nuhu and Faithia Williams.
Written by Joy Isi Bewaji and directed by Biodun Stephens, Seven and a Half Dates tells the story of a young hard working lady, Bisola, who is engrossed in her passion for her career and finds herself in a seemingly unending quest for love.
Her father, Mr Gomez, comes to the rescue. Inspired by the game of chess, he sets Bisola up for 10 different dates to which he hopes one of them yields a positive result.
- New Money
New Money was directed by Tope Oshin and has A-list actors like; Falz, Jemima Osunde, Kate Henshaw, Dakore Akande, Femi Branch and Wale Ojo.
Released on March 23, 2018, New Money tells the story of a young girl, Toun (Jemima Osunde), who goes from being a normal shop girl to a billionaire after her father left her with a lot of money.
Sylvia, is one of the Nollywood Cinema Movies written by Vanessa Kanu and directed by Daniel Oriahi.
Released on September 21, 2018, the movie stars Chris Attoh, Zainab Balogun, Ini Dima Okojie, Udoka Oyeka, Lolo 1, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Lord Frank, Bolaji Ogunmola among others.
The movie is a tale of love, lust and obsession.
Synopsis: Chris Attoh as Richard, has always existed between the real world and a fantasy world, which is home to his friend and lover Sylvia (Zainab Balogun). Filled with passion and love, the two devotees embark on a journey of commitment.
- The Royal Hibiscus Hotel
This movie was released on February 10, 2018. The Royal Hibiscus Hotel was directed by Ishaya Bako and stars Zainab Balogun, Kenneth Okolie, Joke Silva, Olu Jacobs.
The romantic Comedy movie is about a young chef who returns home from London only to discover that her inheritance is about to be sold to the man she loves.
- Chief Daddy
Another nollywood cinema movie that made the top list in 2018 is Chief Daddy which was released on December 14, 2018, and has raked over N40 million.
Chief Daddy was directed by Niyi Akinmolayan and stars top actors such as; Funke Akindele, Linda Ejiofor, Zainab Balogun and Bisola Aiyeola.
The film tells the story of a billionaire, Chief Beecroft, a flamboyant benefactor to a large extended family of relatives, household staff and assorted mistresses. Chief lives really large until he dies and everything change.
- The Washerman
The Washerman which stars Frank Donga, Chris Okagbue, IK Ogbonna, Etinosa Idemudia was released on August 31, 2018.
The film was directed by Charles Uwagbai and it tells the story of a successful blogger, KC, who has low self-esteem and is in desperate search of true love.
After too many disappointments, she says a prayer, when the answer came, it wasn’t what she expected.
- The Ghost and the Tout
The Ghost and the Tout is a Nollywood Cinema Movies that was released on May 11, 2018 and grossed N30 million one week after it was released.
The film which stars Toyin Abraham, Biodun Stephen, Chigul, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha was directed by Charles Uwagbai.
The comedy movie tells the story of a young lady who grew up in the ghetto. She met a ghost in need of her help to communicate with the people he left behind after an unfortunate incident.
Soon her life is thrown into a series of dramas that only her can see and understand.
